Advice for multilingual SEO. Part 1

Multilingual SEO

Take into account all the possibilities.

Living as I do on the conjunction of three countries, that’s Belgium, Holland and Germany, will create search engine optimisation (SEO) quite a challenge. Simply in the encircling space of the village I work from are four spoken languages thus if you extrapolate that out to each possible combination of search terms, browser settings and pc language settings then you begin to determine the size of the problem.

Leaving aside the differing search terms and therefore your numerous sets of keyword targets, every totally different language user will have their own set of computer and browser language and preference settings that can give utterly differing search results.

As a quick example strive looking -
management consulting Liege
- on Google.com and Google.be-fr.
OptimaGest Management Consulting is 2nd out of 392,000 on Google.com and twenty fourth out of 291,000 on Google.be-fr. (Do not worry, I am still working on the Google.be rankings)

So here are a few tips that I’ve got picked up to form your job a touch easier.

1st setup your browser for multilingual searches.

Arm yourself with a browser that has configurable profiles. Firefox springs to mind.

Founded a profile for every needed language therefore that your preference language and search engine preferences will be configured.

For Firefox installed with the installer:
Make positive firefox is not running.
Then open the Windows “Begin” menu, click “Run” (or Windows key + R) and then sort:
firefox.exe -profilemanager   or   firefox.exe -P

If that does not work (it doesn’t on my machine) then you would like to kind the full path to the firefox.exe surrounded by quotes and then the switch within the “Run” box. e.g.

“C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” -profilemanager

For Mac OS X launch the Terminal
(Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and enter:
/Applications/firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager

If that does not work then embrace the -bin switch e.g.:
/Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin -profilemanager

The profile manager dialogue will open and I suggest that you retain the “default” profile as this can preserve all of your current settings. Click on “Produce Profile” and follow the instructions. You should produce and name a profile for each language and then create certain the “Do not raise at startup” possibility is unchecked. Currently when you begin Firefox normally the profile manager can open and you’ll be able to pick out your required profile.

As you begin each profile for the first time go to “Tools” then “Options…”, “Advanced” tab and then click the Languages “Choose…” button. Here set the language that is needed for that exact profile and remove the default en-us.

Then open each search engine e.g. google.be in turn and specify in the preferences the required language etc so mirroring as closely as attainable the particular setup your audience will have.

Currently you’ll quickly check your search engine rankings while not having to re-configure your browser settings each time for every target market.

Currently the multilingual keywords problem.

In fact before you’ll be able to monitor your success you must 1st develop your keyword strategy and that’s not as uncomplicated as it’d seem. We should research fastidiously our target keywords in every of our target markets. It is pointless OptimaGest Management Consulting being range one on Google.be-nl if the chosen keywords are never really utilized in dutch.

My native language is english with a passable knowledge of german and the small beginnings of french thus I am captivated with my translators for french and dutch. However web designers are not within the business of producing perfectly grammatical and vocabulary correct sentences like translators delight in. We are trying to pack an optimum range of relevant search terms or keywords into our copy while keeping it on message and readable.

In our native language we tend to will, with a bit of analysis and apply, turn out internet website content that just “glows” with pertinent keywords and phrases leading on to mega search results. However where do you begin in language 2, three or 4?
That will be the subject of my next article.
